Our Mission
The Grant Bowl Community Coalition exists to:
Secure a long-term lease from Portland Parks so PPS can immediately fix the Grant Bowl turf and reopen it for student-athletes. ***COMPLETE***
IN PROCESS Fundraise to install permanent field lighting at the Grant Bowl asap.
Implement the Grant Bowl Master Plan including embedding permanent terraced seating into the 100+ year old “berm.” This excellent alternative to bleachers keeps the park environment intact and gives students, neighbors and the community a place sit, cheer and connect.
Eliminate missed hours of class + homework time commuting to other fields for practice + home games.
Together, we can reach our goal of $500,000!
On May 31, 2024, the PPS School Board’s Facilities & Operations Committee agreed to move forward with the City of Portland’s Land Use application process to install lights at the Grant Bowl. The catch? Due to PPS’s massive maintenance backlog, the community will need to fund this significant project. How much will it cost? Based on estimates provided by Bora Architects and Musco Sports Lighting, the purchase and installation of lights at “the Bowl” will be approximately $500,000.00. But this investment will take Grant off several lists of a lonely club of one:
The only turf football field in Oregon without field lights.
The only football field that is home to an 11-player team in Oregon without field lights.
The only 6A high school in Oregon without field lights. In fact, all 5A, 4A and 3A high schools in Oregon have field lights!
The agreement between the Grant Bowl Community Coalition and PPS is a significant first step to bring our student athletes, their fans, and our large Grant High School community home — to allow students to practice in their own neighborhood, allow parents to stop worrying as inexperienced teen drivers navigate crossing the city for practices/games, and allow kids to play more home games in their own neighborhood where our community can support them. We’ve heard from well over 1,000 of our fellow community members that support this endeavor, and now we have our biggest ask!
Please spread the word to all your families, friends, and neighbors and ask them to click the donate button and give what they can. If you or your friends and family work for a company like Nike, Adidas, Columbia, etc., please ask that they make their donation through Benevity to “Friends of Grant Football” so that their donation is matched by their employer.
